Safety Data Sheets
Safety Data Sheets (SDS), formerly Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), are documents required by Federal Law that communicate chemical properties, hazards, protective measures, and safety precautions associated with the handling of chemical products. Chemical manufacturers, distributors, or importers of chemical products are required to present this detailed information in a consistent, user-friendly, 16-section format.
OSHA requires employers to provide complete, accurate, and readily accessible SDS information to employees for each hazardous chemical used in their facility. Employees must be able to gain immediate access to the SDS information without leaving their work area when needed. A back-up must be available that can be rapidly accessed in the event of a power outage or other emergency.
